Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine has been regulated in the province of Ontario Since April 2013. Though other practitioners can use acupuncture as part of their scope of practice for muscular skeletal pain, Acupuncture will not be covered under their personal insurance plans unless they are registered with the CTCMPAO. The provincial healthcare plan, OHIP, has yet to cover the cost for treatments.
Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine – As acupuncture is regulated, a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner is insured and registered with the college to provide a TCM diagnosis, insert a needle bellow the skin surface, and provide herbal medicines based on the TCM diagnosis & treatment plan. A Registered Acupuncturist, R.Ac cannot prescribe herbal medicine generally provided along with acupuncture treatments. that falls under the scope of an R.TCMP.
